Commodore Report AGM July 2017

The 2017 Annual General Meeting is upon us, and it provides an opportunity for the Browns Bay Boating Club Committee Office Bearers to report back to our Membership on activities, initiatives and issues we have faced in the previous 12 months.

Your Committee met 12 times during the year, we meet in the Browns Bay Marine Centre in the Committee room upstairs on the 3rd Wednesday of every month, starting at 7.30pm. The meetings usually last 1 to 1 ½ hours. There are 13 people on the Committee.

The year started with a change in our operational Radio channels with Channel 80 has moving to 64 and Channel 82 moving to 60. This change came into effect 1 Oct 2016. These changes were made to make space for newly allocated services for international ship tracking and data services, which will ensure New Zealand VHF radio services are compatible with the rest of the world.

New Committee Initiatives

1) Longest Fish Monthly Competition where members can measure their fish on the measuring tape glued to the concrete step beside the tractor shed. The winner receives a $20 bar tab.

2) Portable “Boaties Wanted!” signage, to catch the eye of motorists and pedestrian’s moving around the Marine Centre. This initiative is to encourage new members, both Social and Tractor membership.

3) Minivan availability for functions to ensure patrons get home safely after Boating Club events. This service has been operating successfully, and offers to deliver you home within the vicinity of East Coast Bays for $10 per couple.

4) The BBBC Website has been refreshed by a professional website designer resulting is a much simpler and cleaner website that is easier to navigate to find relevant information.

Paul Archer

  • Joined Browns Bay Boating Club Oct 2014
  • Committee Member 2016-2017

Thank you Paul for stepping onto Committee and helping out when needed. We will remember you every time we put out those signs!

Your Committee has worked tirelessly throughout the year to make every event a success, and we encourage all members to come along and join in the fun. Further, our Committee is well aware that we need to schedule interesting and relevant events to attract our Members along. If you have an event idea that will be of interest to the wider Club Membership, please contact any Committee member at any time. With three Members leaving the Committee, we therefore have vacancies to be filled, so if you are interested in coming on board, want to the influence direction of the Club, actively promote new initiatives, give back to the Community etc, please contact any Committee member to discuss.

These events are promoted on our Facebook page, please keep an eye on the page for what’s coming up. We use both the Website, Mail Chimp and Facebook to communicate with our members. A notice sent out via Chimp will be uploaded to our Facebook page in parallel to ensure consistency of communication and for wider reach as we are aware members do prefer one system over others. While it is difficult to track Website visits, we are tracking Mail Chimp and Facebook activities and encourage you to open and read the information contained within. We also welcome your comments on the refreshed website.
Tractors

The race against rust on both Sea Squirt and Sea Mantis continued this year with Bernie and Dale both fighting the elements to keep our tractors operational. It’s a constant battle created by the natural reaction of metals immersed in salt. As our Treasurer will attest, the Tractor maintenance team of Bernie and Dale have done a sterling job keeping the tractor running costs under control, equal to 40% of the previous year with their weekly Thursday night maintenance sessions, and regular support by our Service Provider Agrowquip. The excellent work done by Bernie and Dale has meant that we can reduce the frequency of the Agrowquip service from fortnightly to monthly, thereby reducing the servicing costs to the Club.

Committee’s biggest project was to satisfy Coastguard request to replace the cage and towing system on Sea Mantis. The photo’s below show the cage as it was, then a photo of the new towing
system taken looking down from the drivers position. Anyone requiring training on this new system should make contact with the Club Safety Officer. Members will note a much better visibility of the actual tow ball’s from the driver position, and therefore safer maneuvering when attaching tractor to trailer. The project took a lot longer than we initially expected, with changes, delays, design reviews pushing the delivery date out. The Committee acknowledges the huge effort put into this project by Bernie, requiring the patience of a Saint, with successful completion in June this year.

Sponsorship

Your Committee acknowledges the support of our Sponsors Fish City Albany for Fishing Competition prizes and free bags of salt ice, Car Colours Ltd for supply of Tractor paints and sprays, Hunts Fishing, The Trailer Shop and Fish City for allowing us to locate Browns Bay Boating Club brochures on their shop counters.

This year, the weather impacted a number of key Boating Club events, especially Fishing Competitions that needed to be rescheduled for safety reasons. The impact these reschedules had on Committee was significant, forcing them to put aside their own family needs weekend after weekend until the event could be finally scheduled or cancelled. We all owe a big thank you to our hard working Committee, a passionate 13 strong group of volunteers, ably assisted by their partners and families who give generously to the Club and work hard to create value for our Membership. Its great to be part of this team, thank you again for all your support.
